Why ‘Fugger town’?

Sterzing is called the ‘Fugger town’ because the Fugger family from Augsburg shaped mining in Europe in the 15th century. The extraction of silver, lead and copper in the side valleys around Sterzing brought prosperity – the magnificent town houses and many other traces of this can still be discovered in the town today.

In Sterzing, everything is close at hand: from the centre, you can reach lifts, walking trails and bike routes within just a few minutes – even on foot. And if the mountains are calling, the Rosskopf gondola lift will take you up to over 1,800 m in no time at all.
