The Women of 1946. Voting, Choosing, Building
8/17/2026 09:00 - 17:00
An exhibition dedicated to a milestone in Italy's democratic history is opening in Bolzano: the first time women were able to vote. "The Women of 1946. Voting, Choosing, Building" will be presented on Wednesday, 12 August, in the entrance hall of Bolzano's Town Hall, at Vicolo Gumer 7.
Marking the eightieth anniversary of that historic moment, the exhibition invites visitors to rediscover the significance of an achievement that marked women's entry into full political citizenship. Voting, Choosing, Building: three words that capture not only 1946, but also the responsibility of taking part in the decisions of the present and the future.
The exhibition recalls the women who, for the first time, were able to contribute directly to the country's democratic life, and encourages reflection on the fact that rights are not simply a legacy of the past, but living tools to be exercised, safeguarded and carried forward.
Designed to be interactive, the exhibition invites visitors to reflect on collective memory and on how women have been represented in historical narratives.
The exhibition is curated by Anna Michelazzi and Valentina Leonardi, with support from COOLtour and Artemisia, projects of the association La Strada - Der Weg ETS, and was realized with the support of the Municipal Office for Family, Women, Youth and Social Promotion and the Youth Policies of the Autonomous Province.
The opening will also feature a contribution from the Historical Women's Archive, with an in-depth talk by Giada Noto, a scholar and expert in the field.
The exhibition will remain on display until August 31st.
